Write A Momoir!

Tips and tools to create a loving tribute to your mom
Ina's Mom, Frances Feldman

What is a Momoir?

Picture

A momoir is a story about you and your mom.

It can be an episode in your life you remember vividly -- something that was fun, sad, poignant --- or an everyday occurrence, one that in the reliving informs you about how your mom helped instill values in you, or had fun doing something simple like playing a game with youf. Or reading to you, and how perhaps that helped set you on a course of enjoying  reading for the rest of your life.

It can also be a piece about your mom's story ... where she was born, what she did in life, her own joys and accomplishments, obstacles and how she overcame them.

Remember that photos will enrich your story immensely.

This photo is of my mother, with me on our car, in front of our row home in Philadelphia. I'm about two. My father has not yet come home from fighting in France during WWII.

What I remember most vividly, and my earliest memory, is  my mother standing on the stairs when my dad walked in the door.
She was very quiet, but radiant. And as you can see, beautiful.

My Aunt Shirl (my mom's sister) was with us. We were facing the front door, in the living room. My aunt knelt behind me, and told me to say "Hubba, Hubba!" when my dad came in.

I learned later, as a grownup, that my mom had recorded a message -- on an actual record -- which she sent to my dad while he was fighting in that war. She had me speak into the microphone, too. The message from both of us was, "We miss you, and can't wait to see you safe and back home."

We invite you to send us your momoir. We'll be selecting stories to post on our blog, and when we have enough, to create a book of momoirs.
